The Government of Canada Supports Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust

CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND--(Marketwire - July 2, 2008) - The Confederation Centre Young Company will celebrate Quebec heritage as part of its summer series, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, on behalf of the Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust.

The Young Company will use the $41,000 in funding to produce Quebec a la Carte as part of its 2008 summer series, "We Are Canadian!", which will highlight the history and culture of the province through music, dance, and words. Each summer, the series showcases a Canadian province, territory, or important element of Canadian culture. This year's series will mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City by celebrating the heritage of the province of Quebec. The production opens on July 1 as part of the Canada Day festivities and ends on August 23.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to announce its support to the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust, which enables the Young Company to present this event that celebrates the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City," said Minister Verner. "This anniversary provides an opportunity to highlight the unique role that a dynamic, strong, and diverse Canadian Francophonie has played in building our country."

"Canada Day celebrations in the Charlottetown area will provide residents and visitors a chance to honour the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City," said Minister MacKay. "I congratulate the Confederation Centre Young Company on this initiative that celebrates the richness of our country's culture and heritage."

"We are very grateful for the support we receive from the Department of Canadian Heritage for this incredible production that will promote the music, heritage, and culture of Quebec," said David MacKenzie, Chief Executive Officer of Confederation Centre of the Arts. "Quebec a la Carte is the second production in the Confederation Centre Young Company series called We are Canadian! which aims to showcase a different province, territory or culture each summer."

The Celebrate Canada! program promotes pride in being Canadian by encouraging people to participate in activities offered from June 21 to July 1.

The Government of Canada has provided this support as part of Canada-wide funding for Celebrate Canada! activities, which, in 2008, will mark the 400th anniversary of Quebec City. This will be a unique occasion that gives all Canadians a chance to celebrate the historic founding of the Canadian state, together at community events.
