The Government of Canada Supports Golden District Arts Council (Kicking Horse Culture)

GOLDEN, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - May 12, 2008) - The Golden District Arts Council (Kicking Horse Culture) will continue to bring world-class performances to audiences in the town of Golden thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.

The Honourable Jim Abbott, Parliamentary Secretary for Canadian Heritage and Member of Parliament (Kootenay-Columbia), on behalf of the Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, today announced funding for the Golden District Arts Council (Kicking Horse Culture).

The $10,000 in funding will be used to help support Live Kicks and Summer Kicks, two annual multidisciplinary performing arts series that take place at various venues in the town of Golden. These events present a full spectrum of the performing arts, including concerts, theatre, dance, music, and various outreach activities. This year, the series will showcase nineteen acts from approximately six provinces and territories.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to support British Columbia's performing arts scene," said Minister Verner. "We are committed to helping organizations that provide Canadians with high-quality performing and visual arts experiences."

"Our Government is proud to support initiatives that offer Canadians in smaller communities direct access to first-rate cultural performances," said Mr. Abbott. "Local events such as this reflect the important role that the arts play in communities across Canada."

"This increase in funding from Canadian Heritage means that we can look to further increasing the richness of performing arts programming that we bring to Golden," said Caleb Moss, Co-chair of the Golden District Arts Council (Kicking Horse Culture). "With this support, our audiences are blessed with getting to see and hear fine Canadian artists, whom we might not otherwise be able to afford."

The Golden District Arts Council is 38 years old and has been operating under the name Kicking Horse Culture since 2004. The mission of this organization is to engage, energize and enrich the cultural life of Golden and the surrounding region, which has a population of about 8 000 people of diverse ethnic backgrounds.

The Government of Canada has provided this funding through the Arts Presentation Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
