The Government of Canada Supports Hudson's Hope Historical Society

HUDSON'S HOPE, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Aug. 11, 2008) - Hudson's Hope-area residents and visitors will have enhanced opportunities to access local heritage, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.

The Honourable Jay Hill, Member of Parliament (Prince George-Peace River), on behalf of the Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for the Hudson's Hope Historical Society.

Funding of $7,972 will be used by the Society to undertake a specialized equipment project to upgrade the museological standards of the Hudson's Hope Museum. The project will involve the purchase and installation of an environmental monitoring system, lighting, smoke detectors, and a dinosaur fossil display unit. Together, these components will increase the exhibition and conservation capacity of the Museum, provide an improved visitor experience, and allow for enhanced programming in this heritage space.

"The Government of Canada is committed to offering all Canadians the opportunity to appreciate local history and heritage," said Minister Verner. "By supporting local heritage organizations, we are contributing not only to the vitality of the Peace River Region, but of Canada as a whole."

"I am pleased to be part of this funding announcement," said Mr. Hill. "This upgraded museum and presentation space will benefit numerous cultural and community groups in the Hudson's Hope area."

"The receipt of this grant from Canadian Heritage for specialized equipment will improve current conservation and exhibition standards at the museum," said Rosaleen Ward, Museum Coordinator. "An environmental-monitoring program can now be put in place, and more dinosaur fossils will be put on display. This is a tremendous boost for our small community museum."

The Hudson's Hope Historical Society, established in 1967, owns and operates the Hudson's Hope Museum. Through education and community involvement, the Society aims to foster a public interest in the history of the area from prehistory to the present time. To this end, the Museum acquires, preserves, and exhibits objects and archival material that tell the story of the Hudson's Hope area.

The Government of Canada has provided this funding under the Cultural Spaces Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program contributes to improved physical conditions for artistic creativity and presentation or exhibition. It is designed to improve access for Canadians to the performing, visual, and media arts, as well as to museum collections and heritage exhibitions.
