The Government of Canada Supports Metis Provincial Council of British Columbia

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Feb. 21, 2008) - On behalf of the Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, Senator Gerry St. Germain today announced funding for the Metis Provincial Council of British Columbia.

Funding of $135,750 will allow the Metis Provincial Council of British Columbia to carry out a range of activities in support of the Michif language over a period of three years. Activities will include a Michif training video, language-immersion camp, workshop, and a contribution to the annual National Michif Language Conference.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to provide this funding for Aboriginal language preservation," said Minister Verner. "These funds will help the Metis Provincial Council of British Columbia undertake important work to promote and provide opportunities to learn the Michif language in British Columbia."

"Languages play an important role in community and culture," said Senator St. Germain. "The Metis Provincial Council of British Columbia is doing important work to document, promote, and preserve the Michif language."

"I am very pleased that the Minister of Canadian Heritage has signed the agreement that will provide multi-year funding to help revitalize the Michif language in British Columbia," said Bruce Dumont, President of the Metis Provincial Council of British Columbia.

The Government of Canada has provided this funding under the Aboriginal Languages Initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This initiative maintains and revitalizes Aboriginal languages for future generations by increasing the number of Aboriginal language speakers, encouraging language transmission from generation to generation, and expanding the use of Aboriginal languages in family and community settings.
