The Government of Canada Supports SkyNews Magazine

FOXBORO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 23, 2009) - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Daryl Kramp, Member of Parliament (Prince Edward-Hastings), today announced funding to support the creation of Canadian editorial content in SkyNews, an astronomy magazine.

"By explaining and debating important scientific issues from a Canadian perspective, magazine reporters and writers like those working for SkyNews contribute to our country's creativity and innovation," said Minister Moore. "Magazines are also essential to the vitality of our culture and the growth of our economy, which is why our Government created the Canada Periodical Fund."

"I am very pleased that our Government is investing in creating a Canadian viewpoint for SkyNews, a high-calibre astronomy magazine," said Mr. Kramp.

"The Canada Magazine Fund has been hugely successful in supporting top-quality editorial content in magazines like SkyNews," said Greg Keilty, Publisher, SkyNews. "Science content is costly to produce, given that there is a small market in Canada. So there would be no Canadian science magazines-or the many jobs that they create-without this well-targeted support. We greatly appreciate it and I can assure you that the 80,000 Canadian amateur astronomers who read every issue of SkyNews appreciate it as well."

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $23,514 under the Support for Editorial Content component of the Canada Magazine Fund. The Government recently announced that it would maintain its support for Canadian magazines through the creation of the Canada Periodical Fund, a modern, streamlined program that will replace the Canada Magazine Fund and the Publications Assistance Program. This new fund, which will be launched in 2010-2011, will help magazines such as SkyNews reflect Canadian interests for years to come.
