The Government of Canada Supports the Mission District Historical Society

MISSION, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Feb. 16, 2009) - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Randy Kamp, Member of Parliament (Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission), today announced funding for the Mission District Historical Society, which will be used to support the February Winter Festival, being held from February 6 to 22, 2009.

Since this festival began, residents and visitors to the Mission region have been able to enjoy music shows, historic displays, and the reconstruction of a one-room schoolhouse in which pioneers spoke about the history of education.

"History is fascinating, which is why Canadians love to learn more about their past and their origins," said Minister Moore. "We are proud to support the Mission District Historical Society in its mandate to research, conserve, and teach the history and heritage of Mission."

"I would like to congratulate the Mission District Historical Society and all of the volunteers who have made the February Winter Festival possible," said Mr. Kamp. "This is just the latest example of the good work that they continue to do in our community."

"Mission District Historical Society is delighted to receive Government of Canada funds for our mid-February celebrations," said Sharon Syrette, Coordinator of Heritage Places for the Mission District Historical Society. "The variety and quality of our events and exhibits will be greatly enhanced, including participation of high-school students from throughout the district."

Funding of $5,900 is provided through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage, which helps give Canadians more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and historic anniversaries in Canada this year.
