DELTA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Sept. 2, 2016) - Western Economic Diversification Canada
Today, the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities and Member of Parliament for Delta, on behalf of Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada, announced $2 million in funding to the Vancouver International Maritime Centre (VIMC). This investment will help VIMC attract international shipping companies to establish, expand or retain shipping operations on Canada's West Coast.
VIMC provides a vital service that promotes Vancouver as the preferred global location for the international shipping market. By marketing Canada's strategic location and business opportunities, VIMC aims to attract up to eight regional headquarters or branch offices, $18 million in investments and approximately 200 direct and indirect professional jobs.
Vancouver is North America's third largest port by total tonnage of goods shipped, and plays an important role as a major economic driver in our economy. By building a strong maritime sector in British Columbia, the Government of Canada is helping create jobs and provide opportunities for businesses to generate sustainable and inclusive growth in our communities.
"We have heard from Canadians that we must tap into economic opportunities and create the sustainable prosperity middle class families need. By attracting jobs and investments in British Columbia's maritime sector, we are supporting the growth of a highly skilled Canadian workforce and building an economy that works for everyone."
- Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada
"Strengthening our maritime industry is the kind of investment that will support local families and businesses. I'm proud to see Vancouver promoted on an international stage and providing opportunities for businesses to create sustainable and inclusive growth in our communities."
- Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities and Member of Parliament for Delta
"With Canada's strong economy, stable banking sector, and sound political system, we have the necessary elements to attract corporate business activities and sustainable, high-knowledge jobs to Vancouver.
