The Government of Canada to Boost West Coast Maritime Sector

DELTA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Sept. 2, 2016) - Western Economic Diversification Canada

Today, the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities and Member of Parliament for Delta, on behalf of Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada, announced $2 million in funding to the Vancouver International Maritime Centre (VIMC). This investment will help VIMC attract international shipping companies to establish, expand or retain shipping operations on Canada's West Coast.

VIMC provides a vital service that promotes Vancouver as the preferred global location for the international shipping market. By marketing Canada's strategic location and business opportunities, VIMC aims to attract up to eight regional headquarters or branch offices, $18 million in investments and approximately 200 direct and indirect professional jobs.

Vancouver is North America's third largest port by total tonnage of goods shipped, and plays an important role as a major economic driver in our economy. By building a strong maritime sector in British Columbia, the Government of Canada is helping create jobs and provide opportunities for businesses to generate sustainable and inclusive growth in our communities.
