The Great Catalan Canadian Winegrape Adventure Smackdown (Part Two)

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 2, 2013) - On September 20, 2013, Charles Fajgenbaum, owner or Fermentations! returned from Catalonia, Spain after harvesting 40 tonnes of some of the region's most premium wine grapes. This is the second year Charles embarked on this crazy impossible mission of bringing the living history of Catalan wine-making resources to winemakers in Canada. And you thought you could use a drink. If you can use a drink, or at least want to have an opportunity to check out the wines that are made from these grapes, Charles is inviting media to taste some wines, and compare them to commercially produced vintages at the Smackdown Challenge being held at Fermentations! 201 Danforth Avenue on Friday October 4 from 6 pm to 8 pm. The betting odds are that you will not be able to tell commercial wines from Fermentations! produced vintages. Want to take them up on that?

"They thought I was crazy, coming to Catalonia, and shipping grapes back to Canada, but the farmers were so intrigued upon meeting me that they not only agreed to sell me the grapes, but invited me to harvest with them." Photos, and a photo essay are available for distribution upon request.

The goal of bringing grapes from Spain was to give people an opportunity to make wine with far better grapes than those trucked in from California's grape ocean. People need to take control of the wines, and costs of their wine enjoyment, Fermentations! offers them an opportunity to do both.

Grenache noir, a staple of Mediterranean winemaking, is part of the harvest bounty, as is Tempranillo and Carignan, while Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, relatively recent introductions to the area flourish, and are coming back to Canada with Charles this year. "We are also working with a local winery to custom blend exceptional white grapes: grenache blanc, macabeo and muscat alexandra. It is a very cool thing to work with winemakers steeped in the local grapes and wine-making culture, even better being able to bring these grapes to Canada for Canadian winemakers."

So why bring these grapes all the way from Spain? Charles operates Fermentations! Located at 201 Danforth Avenue in Toronto. For 20 years Fermentations! has always pushed the envelope, giving clients the opportunity of producing world class wines at a fraction of the cost of purchasing similar wines retail. Equally, as wine-making awards began piling up, a large segment of the home wine-making community began flocking to Charles to purchase a higher quality grape than is typically imported from California.

So the gauntlet is thrown to you. Want to find out more about this crazy impossible dream? Think you can tell apart wines made at Fermentations! from commercially produced Spanish wines?
