The Honourable John Duncan Commemorates Louis Riel

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 16, 2010) - The Honourable John Duncan, Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians and Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, today issued the following statement on behalf of the Government of Canada:

"On November 16, Métis across Canada will celebrate the life and times of Louis Riel. He left an indelible mark not only on the lives of all Métis but on Canada. As a political leader, Riel stood out because of his drive, determination and eloquence. His convictions have inspired deep pride among Métis people that has withstood the test of time. The traditions, culture, and the Michif ancestral language continue to live on in many Métis communities.

Louis Riel is considered one of the first great political Métis leaders, and today he is remembered by many as a hero, defender of Métis rights and father of Manitoba. In 1992, the Government took steps to recognize Louis Riel's contribution to the building of Canada by issuing a commemorative stamp, publishing Riel's collected writings and funding many cultural events. 2010 was declared "Year of the Métis" by my colleagues in Parliament and it certainly has been a year filled with progress. Just this past weekend, our government unveiled a limited edition Year of the Métis medallion to commemorate the year.

I look forward to continuing to work with Métis leaders on the areas set out in the Métis Nation Protocol such as economic development and the strengthening of Métis governance. Together, we are making a difference and I am confident there is much more progress to come.

It is an honour for me to share in commemorating Louis Riel on this special day for the Métis and I encourage all Canadians to join in the celebrations."
