The Honourable Monte Solberg Recognizes National Volunteer Week

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 1, 2008) - The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today issued the following statement in honour of National Volunteer Week.

National Volunteer Week is celebrated from April 27 to May 3, 2008, to mark the importance of volunteerism in Canada, and to recognize the generous commitment of millions of Canadian volunteers who give their time to make our communities and our country better.

Canadian volunteers play a vital role in our communities. They contribute almost 2 billion hours per year to Canadian organizations. That's the equivalent of 1 million full-time workers.

The efforts of volunteers help build communities that are vibrant, strong and healthy. Their dedication makes Canada a better country for everyone.

During National Volunteer Week, the Government of Canada acknowledged the accomplishments of two exceptional volunteers with the Thérèse Casgrain Volunteer Award: Ms. Elizabeth Grandbois of Burlington, Ontario, and Dr. Kwang Yang of Surrey, British Columbia.

Ms. Grandbois, living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), founded the ECOH Foundation-the Elizabeth's Concert of Hope Foundation-and helped raise over $2.5 million for ALS research and support services.

Dr. Yang has made an outstanding volunteer contribution to the multicultural communities of Canada, particularly in British Columbia. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Yang played a leadership role in bringing the programs of the Canadian Diabetes Association to the Chinese community, including the first Chinese-language diabetes education classes in British Columbia.

I would like to thank those who give tirelessly and generously to create strong and vibrant communities. I would also like to encourage those who do not yet volunteer to think about how they can make a difference in the lives of their friends and neighbours through volunteering.

Monte Solberg, P.C., M.P.

Minister of Human Resources and Social Development
