The Journey to Zero: Vega Launches Sustainable Packaging Initiative

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Nov. 27, 2013) -

Editor's Note: There is a video associated with this Press Release.

Vega, the leader in plant-based nutrition, is making strides in the natural foods industry to reduce its environmental impact. After a comprehensive corporate sustainability audit, Vega learned that 71% of its carbon footprint(2) was related to packaging materials. Why? Because like every other company in the industry, most of Vega's products came in bottles made from virgin HDPE - plastic derived from carbon-generating and non-renewable petroleum.

With an ongoing commitment to its goal of achieving net zero carbon footprint, Vega's bottles will now be made of 100%( 1) Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) content plastic.

Charles Chang, Founder and President of Vega, explains, "We believe that sustainability is not just about what goes into our product line; it is a part of everything we do. We are proud to make the change to 100% PCR Tubs as an effort on our Journey to Zero. "

In the next year(3), Vega's switch from virgin plastic bottles to 100% PCR bottles will:

  • Save 278 tons of CO2(4)-63% less CO2 * than virgin plastic
This much CO2 could fill 353 parade balloons, making a balloon-only parade 4 miles long.
  • Divert 233 tons(5) of plastic from the waste stream
Made into Vega bottles stacked end-to-end, that's a stack 58 times the height of Mount Everest.
  • Use 14,865 million BTUs(6) less energy-86% less energy* than virgin plastic
That's enough energy saved to run 140 averaged detached single family homes in America for a year.

And, Vega's new 100% PCR plastic bottles are still fully recyclable. To join Vega's Journey to Zero and to learn more about the new sustainable packaging initiative, please visit:
