The Keg Marks Significant Charitable Milestone

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 19, 2007) - The Keg Steakhouse & Bar, and its employees across North America, recently marked a tremendous milestone. As part of its annual special feature menu, The Keg donates $2 from special entrees to its charitable arm - The Keg Spirit Foundation. This fall, thanks to this contribution from the almost 100 Keg restaurants in Canada and the US, The Keg Spirit Foundation has now surpassed $3.2 million raised since the Foundation's inception in 2001. These funds have been distributed to more than 200 local children's charities in those communities where The Keg operates.

Although The Keg has a long history of charitable giving, the establishment of The Keg Spirit Foundation was the vision of The Keg's President and CEO, David Aisenstat in 2001. Aisenstat is the Foundation's greatest cheerleader, and serves as an inspiration to the more than 8,100 Keg staff. "Our goal for the Foundation was to focus on ways to give back to our communities, and most importantly, to establish the idea of philanthropy as a key lifetime value for the thousands of Keggers whose lives we are privileged to touch." As all Foundation operating costs are underwritten by Aisenstat's privately owned Keg Restaurants Ltd, the Foundation is able to donate 100% of the money that it raises to local charities.

"Since George Tidball founded The Keg in 1971, The Keg has been known as a great place to work for our fun atmosphere, as well as the high level of training and valuable mentorship that The Keg provides," says Aisenstat. "The Keg Spirit Foundation is an extension of those values"

For more than 35 years, The Keg has provided thousands of young people with their first real job. Through Keg training and mentoring, they learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, a good work ethic, respect for each other, and the particular importance of community involvement. Given the importance that mentoring plays within the Keg culture, the focus of The Keg Spirit Foundation has been to recognize organizations that mirror this mentorship while benefiting the development of children and youth. A large beneficiary has been the local chapters of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, a charity well known for their commitment to the mentoring of children.

One of Foundation's cornerstones is the Chairman's Award. Each year, this award recognizes four Keg employees that have demonstrated a high level of commitment to their communities. "Our Chairman's Award program is one way we celebrate those who are at the heart of our company - our staff," says Aisenstat. As well as being recognized at The Keg's annual conference, these award winners direct a $5,000.00 donation to their charity of choice through The Keg Spirit Foundation. Over the years, this program has allowed Keg staff to direct more than $160,000.00 to local charities where they have a personal connection.

Beyond the dollars that have been raised, Keg employees are encouraged to donate their time and energy to local initiatives that benefit their communities. Whether they are participating in local charity walks, filling the storerooms of local emergency shelters, or providing special dinners for families in need, Keg staff come together in a variety of ways to help their communities.

According to Aisenstat, that focus on giving back will become even more prominent in the future. "We are so very proud of the selfless contributions our employees make to those in their communities. You can be certain that our company will not only continue to focus on charitable involvement and inspiring Keggers to be active participants, but to also strive to find new opportunities and inspiration for the Foundation in the coming years."
