The Legion Canadian Youth Athletic Championships Receives Federal Support for Event

SHERBROOKE, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Aug. 7, 2008) - More than 340 young athletes from across the country will participate in The Legion Canadian Youth Athletic Championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec, with the help of the Government of Canada.

The Honourable Helena Guergis, Secretary of State (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) (Sport), on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today a contribution to The Royal Canadian Legion, Dominion Command.

Funding of up to $20,000, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support the annual athletic event. These championships are for youth ages 12 to 17, and encourages them to take part in commemoration activities.

"It is great to see organizations getting involved in teaching our youth about major events in our military history," said Minister Thompson. "We are proud to support initiatives that encourage future generations to remember those who served Canada."

"I am happy to see The Royal Canadian Legion highlighting Veterans in such a youth-focused sporting event," said Secretary of State Guergis. "This event will encourage other organizations to engage youth through similar commemorative initiatives."

The annual Legion Canadian Youth Athletic Championships is in its 32nd year and will be held August 6-12. The event, not only devoted to recognizing athletic achievement, will also bring attention to achievements and sacrifices made by Canadian Veterans. With 2008 marking the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the championships are set to highlight the anniversary as a central theme. Participants will also recognize and reflect on the 65th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, the 55th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, and on our most recent losses in Afghanistan.

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
