The Most Expensive Student Residences in Scotland

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 19, 2010) - Student accommodation in the UK is notoriously expensive, with residence fees continuously rising each year. Over the course of the past three years, the cost of university-provided lodging has increased by 20% as it rocketed through the £200 per week barrier. The most expensive student residence in Scotland has been revealed as the seven premium rooms at Edinburgh University. For one of these rooms, students will have to be willing to part with £216 per week.

According to a survey by Scotland on Sunday, St Andrews in Fife is the second most expensive. Some of these rooms are fully catered, en suite, and will cost its residents up to £188 per week. The costs equal the rates of Unite, a private company that has moved into the Scottish student market.

Unite provides students with housing that can be tailored to include a variety of luxuries, including widescreen televisions. For the same price, students could find a two-bedroom flat in Edinburgh's New Town or even a three-bedroom flat in a less popular area.

Broadcaster, Iain McWhirter, who is also the rector of Edinburgh University, said: "I've been approached repeatedly by students who are really appalled by the cost of accommodation. Edinburgh University insists its accommodation is no more expensive than comparable universities in England but there is no doubt that it could become a major disincentive to students."

Many student leaders and university rectors have described these charges as "appalling" and issued a warning that they could prove to be discouraging for future applicants. Modern students have a wide range of overheads, including student insurance, student loan repayments, social expenditure, and the increasing accommodation rates continues to place additional financial pressure on these young individuals.
