The Movember Foundation Puts Its Money Where Its Moustache Is to Launch True NTH

The Largest Ever Global Investment to Improve the Quality of Life for Men Living With Prostate Cancer

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwired - September 29, 2014) - As millions of men around the world prepare to donate their upper lips to Movember -- the Movember Foundation announces the largest ever global investment to improve the quality of life for men living with prostate cancer through the launch of their new program, True NTH. The Movember Foundation, the leading global organization committed to changing the face of men's health, is investing over $36,000,000 to launch True NTH with more than $10,000,000 to be utilized within the United States.

For men living with prostate cancer, there are huge lifestyle impacts that leave men in the dark about how to go back to living a normal life. A significant number of men who are living with and beyond prostate cancer will experience sexual health issues such as erectile dysfunction, psychological issues including depression, and continence issues which often have a debilitating impact on their lives and their family's lives.

True NTH is a revolutionary new program that will help men living with prostate cancer enhance their quality of life by gaining access to information, care and support including treatment information, lifestyle advice, shared experiences with other prostate cancer survivors, and easier access to healthcare professionals. Launching in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, this comprehensive set of personalized programs will improve the way that men and their families live with and beyond prostate cancer.

"There is an urgent need to change the way in which prostate cancer services are delivered. Historically, the investment into new approaches to prostate cancer care has been very low and the quality of life of many men living with prostate cancer needs to be improved," said Paul Villanti, Executive Director of Programs at the Movember Foundation. "As treatment for men with prostate cancer is completed, many men report fear of recurrence, fatigue, distress, anxiety, depression, erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. These services are vital to supporting men and their families return to living a life as normal as possible. True NTH addresses this head on."

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide for men. Over the past 25 years, a dramatic improvement in survival has been observed, partly due to earlier diagnosis and improvements in treatment. However, as survival rates improve, there is an overwhelming growing need to address the quality of life, care and services to manage prostate cancer as a long-term chronic condition to help men get back to living a normal life.

"True NTH represents the first multinational effort to better the lives of men living with prostate cancer," said Dr. Drew Peterson, Vice Chief of Medical Operations at Duke University. "The sky is the limit for what we will now be able to do for men with prostate cancer to improve the level of care and information that they have access to. We want men to be able to get back to living a normal life and being physically and mentally well. True NTH will help us achieve this."

The Movember Foundation is uniquely positioned to globally bring together independent healthcare professionals, men living with prostate cancer, and their families to shape the True NTH program. Using money raised by the Movember community, the Foundation has brought these global experts together, for the first time, to design and implement comprehensive, customized programs that address the critical unmet needs of men living with and beyond prostate cancer.

Rick Bangs, a prostate cancer survivor from Detroit, Michigan said, "When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer I didn't have a guide to help me, I had very little information or support to make important decisions. Every man is an individual and requires a personalized approach to care and support to get their life back on track. I am looking forward to seeing others take advantage of True NTH to manage their lives after being diagnosed with prostate cancer."

True NTH will initially be rolled out in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The services will be monitored and evaluated to ensure that there is a demonstrable impact on care with a view to scaling the programs nationally and internationally.
