The New Road Access is Inaugurated at Saint-Joseph's Oratory

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - May 31, 2006) - With the official inauguration of the new access road leading to the sanctuary and the creation of an entrance with traffic lights on Queen Mary Road, Saint-Joseph's Oratory completes a significant phase of its development and restoration project.

Surrounded by the spokesperson for the Oratory's Foundation within the scope of the Great Bee, comedian Rita Lafontaine and the President of the Oratory's fund raising campaign, Mr. Alban D'Amours, president and CEO of the Mouvement des caisses Desjardins, as well as City of Montreal representatives and several partners from the environmental, political, religious and economical sectors, the Rector of the sanctuary, Father Claude Grou, CSC cut the ribbon and inaugurated this long-awaited access road which is more respectful of the mountain. The ongoing landscaping will allow this location to fully shine. In addition, an on-ramp will complete the new road, allowing access to the Crypt, the Holy Cross Pavilion and the Pilgrim Pavilion level at the end of August.

The development work at Saint-Joseph's Oratory began in 2003 with the restoration of the Holy Cross Pavilion and the installation of a new escalator. As early as next month, the construction of a first elevator will begin in the Votive Chapel. "This dream is finally becoming a reality", stated Father Claude Grou, CSC, with satisfaction. In fact, as early as 1927, we envisioned the construction of elevators so that mobility-impaired persons could access all levels of Saint-Joseph's Oratory, right up to the Basilica. The construction of the terrasse on the front of the Oratory is scheduled for 2007 and the construction of two new pavilions will begin in 2008-2009.

Rita Lafontaine and Alban D'Amours took advantage of the event to officially launch their respective areas of the fund raising campaign for the major development project of Saint-Joseph's Oratory. They joined their voices to discuss how the ongoing campaign's theme, "Help us make the Oratory more accessible" meets a critical need for all visitors and how it is important to together preserve one of our heritage's treasures for future generations.
