The NPD Group Inc.: Moms Correct Summer Snacking Habits as Kids Go Back to School

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 6, 2007) - With back to school approaching, kids are saying good-bye to homework-free nights, extended bed times and the snack foods they love. According to The NPD Group, mothers will send their kids to school with healthier food choices compared to what they had at home during summer vacation. In fact, the number of times kids - younger than 18 years of age - will have fruit for a snack will increase eight per cent when they start packing it for school.

As the school year starts, Canadian moms are reaching for yogurt, snack bars and cheese over the more popular treats eaten at home like popcorn, potato chips and frozen novelties.

"Kids' snacks at home tend to be more indulgent and usually include more traditional choices like cookies, potato chips and popcorn because they are in the kitchen cupboard," said Marion Chan, Director, Food and Beverage, NPD Group. "But as summer holidays end and school starts, the snack choices carried from home increasingly reflect mom's desire to ensure nutritional needs are adequately met through perceived healthier choices."

According to NPD's Snack Track, the in-home snacking motivator for moms is to provide a treat or satisfy a craving, while the out of home snack is predominantly based on convenience. For example, in 2006, 23 per cent of children snack choices at home were driven by cravings. However, when eating out of home only 15 per cent say that it's a craving that drives choice. At the same time, 38 per cent of out of home snack choices for children were driven by convenience.

"Snacking is the single largest meal occasion for children, so it remains a great opportunity for the food industry to capitalize on products that provide a mix of perceived better for you and indulgent snacks," says Chan.
