The NPD Group Purchases ACNielsen's Canadian IT Tracking Business

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 17, 2005) - The NPD Group, a global provider of consumer and retail information and insights, and ACNielsen, the world's leading provider of consumer and marketplace information, today announced that NPD has agreed to purchase select assets related to ACNielsen's Information Technology (IT) tracking business in Canada.

With the transaction, the IT industry will now have a single source for consistent market information across North America. NPD will offer both retail and commercial sales tracking of computers and related peripherals in Canada, as it does in the U.S. NPD has been tracking the retail consumer market in Canada since 2001.

"This transaction continues the vision of NPD, along with its global partner, GfK, of being the gold standard for retail and commercial market information for the IT industry, " said NPD CEO Tod Johnson.

ACNielsen Canada President Pat Gardiner said, "While we have been pleased to serve the needs of our IT clients, we determined that this business is not a good long-term fit with our strategic plan. We are happy to have come to this agreement with NPD and are confident that they will serve our IT clients well."

Gardiner pointed out that IT tracking has been a very small part of ACNielsen's business in Canada. The company is the leading provider of consumer packaged goods (CPG) sales tracking and analysis via its retail measurement services and consumer insights through its Homescan consumer panel.

In addition to establishing NPD as the leading authority on IT sales tracking in North America, today's announcement positions NPD to continue enhancing its superior retailer panel base. NPD's retailer panel is the basis for the IT industry's only total market view for measured channels, including electronic specialty stores, mass merchandisers, department, and imaging specialty channels.

ACNielsen and NPD will be working closely together to ensure that clients are fully informed and their needs are met during the transition period, and there is no disruption in their service going forward.
