The Options Industry Council Announces August Options Trading Volume Decreased 1%

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - September 1, 2010) -  The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that 283,487,110 total options contracts were traded in August, representing a 0.97 percent decrease from August 2009 volume of 286,269,624 contracts.

Average daily trading volume for August was 12,885,778 contracts, down 5.47 percent compared to the same year ago period when 13,631,887 contracts changed hands. August year-to-date volume stood at 2,561,734,543 contracts, an increase of 6.41 percent compared to August 2009 when 2,407,357,991 contracts were exchanged. Year-to-date daily volume had an average of 15,339,728 contracts change hands, which is a 6.41 percent increase over the prior year period when 14,415,317 contracts were exchanged.

Additionally, OIC reported equity options volume of 262,234,107 contracts, 1.75 percent less than in August 2009 when 266,913,045 contracts were traded. Daily equity options volume saw an average of 11,919,732 contracts traded per day in August, which is 6.22 percent less than the same period last year when 12,710,145 contracts were traded on average each day. Year-to-date equity options volume was 2,362,307,730 contracts, compared to 2,249,690,979 contracts at the same point last year, representing an increase of 5.01 percent.
