The Perfect Day to Help Save the Rainforest

International Day for Biological Diversity is a great chance to raise awareness of deforestation, say Sky Rainforest Rescue

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - May 11, 2011) - The UN International Day for Biological Diversity is approaching, which means it's time to start thinking about how we can all do our bit to help preserve biodiversity and reverse the alarming rate of species loss across the globe whilst celebrating the world's amazing wildlife.

This year the theme of the Day (22nd May – update your calendars!) is Forest Biodiversity, the importance of which is at the core of the Sky Rainforest Rescue campaign. It's a great chance therefore to highlight the work being done by Sky and WWF to help save three million hectares of remarkably diverse Amazon rainforest from deforestation.

Maintaining habitat is fundamental to the protection of biodiversity and the Amazon rainforest alone is home to a tenth of the world's known species. It's easy to see that protecting the Amazon and preserving its biodiversity go hand in hand.

Through Sky Rainforest Rescue, WWF, Sky and the Acre state government are working with local communities in the Brazilian state of Acre to develop a truly sustainable solution to deforestation. The project is designed to preserve an area of Amazon rainforest the size of Belgium, but also endeavours to improve the lives of local people by improving routes to sustainable markets.

This year, why not use the International Day for Biological Diversity as a great opportunity to show your appreciation for the world's wildlife and do your bit to help preserve the precious rainforest that is home to so much of it.

There are plenty of ways to take part. You could organize an event to fundraise for global species conservation or a local wildlife sanctuary. Or why not take your family or friends on a visit to a nature reserve? You could also help support Sky Rainforest Rescue by making a vital donation to the campaign. There are several ways to donate including the Adopt a jaguar appeal, which starts at just £3 a month.
