The Professional Institute Censured by RDI

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 13, 2007) - The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada denounces the flagrant lack of neutrality displayed by our national French news broadcaster RDI (Radio-Canada) and is very concerned by its censorship. To celebrate Canada's National Public Service Week from June 10 to 16, the Institute initiated a broad awareness campaign. Several 60-second spots explaining the importance of the work performed by public employees and the issues that affect them, are being broadcast throughout the week on cable networks across the country and on the TVA news network in Quebec.

The Institute had also reached a similar agreement with RDI, Radio-Canada's national news network. A last-minute call from this network's advertising representative informed the Institute that only one of our four spots "could be aired on RDI because it did not contain a controversial sentence, like the other messages did."

Michele Demers, President of the Professional Institute, was appalled, "We were notified at the very last minute that our messages were deemed advocacy advertising. I am very surprised, even somewhat scandalized, but my primary concern is the degree of censorship that exists in our national television. One would think we lived in an authoritarian regime. Our spots contain important messages for all Canadians. Why censor the truth? The Institute is contemplating pursuing this matter with the CRTC. After all, it is taxpayers' money that subsidizes our national networks."

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is a national union representing more than 50,000 professionals and scientists throughout Canada.
