The Public Won! Minister to Re-Open MRSC St. John's & CCG Base Kitsilano

OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - November 16, 2015) - In a letter to Minister Hunter Tootoo, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked that the re-opening of the Kitsilano Coast Guard Base and the Marine Rescue Sub-centre in St. John's, Newfoundland be a priority.

"I am thrilled that this government recognizes the importance of re-opening these vital resources to mariners on both coasts," stated Christine Collins, National President, the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE). "Since the closures that began in 2012, UCTE members, marine experts and the public at large have never stopped putting the pressure on the previous government to reverse the decision to close MRSC St. John's and Kitsilano SAR Base.

"Although no timeline has been set, UCTE hopes that it will be done soon and looks forward to assisting with the re-openings if called upon."

The Union of Canadian Transportation Employees, a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, represents the majority of unionized workers at Transport Canada.
