The Red-crowned Parrots Put Harlingen, TX on the Map

'Birding Adventures TV' Highlights the Birding in Harlingen

HARLINGEN, TX--(Marketwire - January 26, 2010) - This week the Red-crowned Parrots will be featured on the Fox Sports Southwest Channel. The show "Birding Adventures TV" took a deeper look into these Parrots that call Harlingen home. The Harlingen Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) worked with the South Texas Nature Co-op to make it possible for the TV crew to find the natural gems that make birding in South Texas some of the best in world.

The three-part series will showcase the Aplomado Falcon, the Guianan Toucanet and the Red-crowned Parrots. An email was sent to community volunteers asking them for help in spotting the Red-crowned Parrots. "I think the people of Harlingen can be really proud that they've got these rare birds as neighbors. But it's not only the parrots -- the birdlife of Harlingen and surrounding areas is so unique and special that I'll definitely be back!" said James Currie, the host of the show.

"Working with the South Texas Nature Co-op gives us a great opportunity to highlight the great birding that we have in Harlingen and around the Rio Grande Valley," said Nydia Tapia Gonzales, director of the Harlingen CVB. It was a regional cooperation effort that made it possible for the three-part series to be successfully shot in the Rio Grande Valley.

"I'd been aware of 'Birding Adventures TV' as the new and very up-and-coming thing in birding and nature shows. We had a fun time with them seeking and filming Harlingen's wild Red-crowned Parrot population. The Fox cable show does a good job of highlighting special species and special areas, like our completely unique community here in the Rio Grande Valley," said Marci Fuller, chairwoman of the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival.

Harlingen continues to lead the birding community with the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival that celebrated its 16th year. The attendance and the number of species that were spotted during the three-day festival were the best in years.

The Great Texas Birding Classic 2010 recently selected Harlingen as the host for the closing events of the 2010 GTBC. They expect the 14th Annual GTBC to be bigger and better this year.

The Harlingen CVB is an organization that promotes and markets Harlingen, Texas.
