The Royal Society of Canada Names New Fellows and Award Winners

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 6, 2013) - The Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada have elected 84 new Fellows, including one Foreign Fellow, and one Honorary Fellow. The newly elected Fellows have diverse backgrounds and disciplines. They have been elected by their peers in recognition of outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievement. Election to the academies of the Royal Society of Canada is the highest honour a scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences.

Additionally, the Royal Society of Canada has announced the recipients of nine medals and awards, which recognize outstanding achievements in several fields of research and scholarship.

"Members of the RSC are proud to welcome into their ranks the 84 newly elected Fellows whose outstanding work has attracted the attention of their peers in a highly competitive environment," said Yolande Grisé, President of the RSC. "It is also a great pleasure to extend our warmest congratulations to the award winners who have distinguished themselves in 2013 by winning the highly coveted awards offered by the three academies of the RSC."

President Grisé added "The success enjoyed by each one contributes to showing the importance of knowledge in the development of Canadian society, and it promotes the advancement of knowledge for the benefit of the population and outreach of Canada in the world. The promotion of knowledge is central to the purpose of the Royal Society of Canada. Giving well deserved recognition to the most prominent intellectuals, scientists and artists is an expression of continued commitment to the ideals embodied by the RSC."
