SCARBOROUGH, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - July 11, 2005) -

Stand UP Scarborough Day Gives Props to Community Pride

The Scarborough Walk of Fame

On Thursday, July 14 at 11:15 a.m., at the Scarborough Town Centre in the Centre Court, Scarborough gets ready to celebrate the stellar achievements of some its most prominent daughters and sons on Stand UP Scarborough Day.

The Scarborough Walk of Fame will acknowledge the amazing contributions of Scarborough citizens to their community and well beyond. There are eight categories of recognition, Entertainment, Sport, Arts and Culture, Science, Health, Community, Education and Historical, and prominent Scarborough natives both locally and internationally are nominated. The inductees of the inaugural 2005 Scarborough Walk of Fame will have their names permanently embedded in a walkway at the Scarborough Town Centre this coming October. More details at www.standupscarborough.ca.

The Scarborough Walk of Fame is one of the central events of the two year long Stand UP Scarborough campaign aimed at revitalizing and refocusing community pride and loyalty on the innumerable positives of the east Toronto community. In April 2004, leaders representing a broad cross section of the corporate, education, health care and civic sectors came together to establish an annual public ceremony to honour outstanding achievements by Scarborough citizens. Mayor David Miller is Honourary Chair of the Walk of Fame and heartily endorses this demonstration of civic pride.

On Thursday, July 14 at 11:15 a.m., the Walk of Fame Committee, represented by City Councillor, Glenn De Baeremaeker and Manny Sousa of Enbridge Gas Distribution, will launch Stand UP Scarborough Day by officially announcing The Scarborough Walk of Fame. A traditional Chinese Lion Dance will be performed to bring honour and good luck to this important event. An exciting day of music and dance, the Walk of Fame quiz and giveaways at the Stand UP Scarborough booth are planned for this party to celebrate Scarborough. The impressive roster of local talent includes Jacqueline Johns, the David Leask Trio and the Temple of Isis Dancers. The first 50 people to complete the quiz receive a Walk of Fame t-shirt. Scarborough kids can express their pride through arts activities presented by Stand UP Scarborough and the Scarborough Arts Council.

Members of the media are invited to the opening ceremonies at 11:15 a.m. in the Centre Square at the Scarborough Town Centre, 300 Borough Drive, Directly off of HWY. 401, between McCowan Road and Brimley Road. RSVP 416-493-4400, ext 639.
