The Alberta Snowboarding Association(ASA) held the first competition of the Southern Alberta Series this weekend at Canada Olympic Park. The FIS events included slopestyle on Saturday, Jan. 9 followed by halfpipe on Sunday, Jan.10. Over 50 riders from across Southern Alberta competed on the weekend enduring freezing winter conditions with double digits below zero.

Sunday's competition was held in the world renowned 22-foot half pipe that Olympic medalist Shaun White had raved about a few days prior to the events. Rumors about his presence created excitement amongst the young athletes who have been training to gain a spot on the national team.

"I can tell the level of riding has increased from last year dramatically in all age categories. I am so happy to see the progression of these athletes, and I look forward to watching them advance throughout the season," said Geoff Peterson who judged the events on Saturday.

Alberta Snowboarding would like to thank the sponsors, parents and volunteers that make these exciting events possible. Prizing for the participants has proudly been provided by local snowboard shop Mission Snow & Skate, and Calgary based eco-friendly clothing company Alpha Base Layer.
