The Sustainable Supply Chain

Challenges, Actions and Capabilities for Sustainable Supply Chain

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - January 12, 2011) - Aberdeen Group, a Harte-Hanks Company (NYSE: HHS), has just published a new study documenting the involvement of 177 companies regarding strategic Supply Chain planning with emphasis on the priorities of the Chief Supply Chain Officer (CSCO). The report, The Sustainable Supply Chain, reveals that sustainable supply chain management and supply chain risk management are among the top three areas for improvement in their organization for one third of the respondents. In addition, the results also showed that 76% of the overall survey respondents have incorporated sustainability criteria into some or all of their supply chain management processes. This highlights the growing importance of establishing sustainability initiatives across the end-to-end supply chain even though it is not a burning issue for most companies.

"The focus on sustainability has changed from being a philanthropic, 'nice to have' initiative, to the one that is core to the success of organization. This trend is exemplified by the fact that Best-in-Class companies are two times more likely than Laggards to have sustainability criteria guide all parts of their supply chain management strategy. Consistently adhering to the sustainability mandates established by clients as well as establishing mandates for your suppliers is an important strategy to gain incremental business value in the current environment," explained Nari Viswanathan, Vice President and Principal Analyst of Supply Chain Management at Aberdeen.

This report highlights the role of sustainability in today's supply chain, the key pressures driving companies to focus on sustainability, the key initiatives established by executives to support their sustainable supply chain goals and the business capabilities and technologies that are critical in successfully executing these initiatives.
