The Tragic Death of Mr. Dugald Christie -

- The Recipient of TLABC's Outstanding Lawyer Award for 2006 - Causes Shock and Sadness throughout the Legal Community

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor VANCOUVER/BC/NEWS RELEASE--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 2, 2006) - The Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia (TLABC) shares the profound sadness felt throughout the legal community following Monday's tragic death of Mr. Dugald Christie, a man of unrivalled dedication to people requiring free legal assistance throughout Western Canada.

Mr. Christie was well known for his massive efforts to provide pro bono legal assistance for people who cannot afford a lawyer, as well as for his high-profile fight to eradicate the provincial sales tax on legal fees. At the time of his death, Mr. Christie was in the midst of a large-scale effort to improve access to justice for all Canadians.

Our TLABC association and many individual members have been longtime supporters of Mr. Christie's causes. Many members contributed directly to the organization he founded, the Western Canada Society to Access Justice, the vehicle linking hundreds of lawyers with pro bono clients throughout BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Mr. Christie and his colleagues have worked tirelessly to provide free legal assistance for those in need.

For the past several months, Mr. Christie worked out of our association's boardroom on a part-time basis. He would meet with clients routinely, all the while also making time for the many other duties he performed, such as the work required through his ongoing legal battle to oppose BC's tax on legal fees.

On March 31, as a result of Mr. Christie's dedication to noble causes, TLABC presented Mr. Christie with its Outstanding Lawyer Award for 2006. "We could not have selected a more worthy recipient of this award," said TLABC Executive Director Carla Terzariol. "Mr. Christie fought incredibly hard for his goals and all of his efforts were aimed at making life better for his fellow citizens. He provided the perfect example of decency, dedication and kindness."

All members and staff of TLABC offer their deepest condolences to Mr. Christie's family and his colleagues at the Western Canada Society to Access Justice.
