The true west, black and free: John Ware Reimagined

University of Calgary presentation to focus on the life of storied black cowboy

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Feb. 22, 2012) - A cowboy who pioneered one of the most popular events at the Calgary Stampede, will be honoured at an evening of music, image and vignettes with author and historian Cheryl Foggo.

John Ware was born into slavery in South Carolina. After moving to Texas, where he became an experienced cowhand, he received fame for driving 3,000 cattle across the border for the North West Cattle company. Settling in the Foothills in 1890, and later establishing a ranch with his family near Brooks, Alberta, Ware was known for his great strength, lariat skills and steer-wrestling abilities.

As part of Black History Month, John Ware Reimagined will feature readings by actors Janelle Cooper and Jesse Lipscombe, music by singer-songwriter Miranda Martini and the direction of John Cooper, this multi-faceted composition looks beyond the legend and explores the galvanizing humanity of this complex and influential western hero.

The University of Calgary's March 21st/Stop Racism Committee, with the help of the Advisor to the President of Women's Issues, Campus Security, Human Resources and the Faculty Association, will be putting on this free event as part of the Stop Racism campaign.
