The Walk Will Do Us Good: Support the AIDS Walk for Life

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 19, 2007) - This Sunday, September 23, approximately 400 participants will assemble at Edmonton's City Hall to show their solidarity for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS by participating in AIDS Walk for Life 2007.

According to the most recent statistics available from the Public Health Agency of Canada, approximately 61,000 Canadians are currently living with HIV/AIDS, with 1,589 reported cases in Alberta since May 1998. In 2006, 218 new infections were reported in Alberta with 47.7% of those occurring in Edmonton.

"The Walk is the one opportunity each year for members of the community to come out and show their support for those living with HIV/AIDS, to prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS, and to walk in honour of loved ones lost to HIV/AIDS-related illness," says Debra Jakubec, Executive Director of HIV Edmonton. "Proceeds from the Walk will assist the host agency, HIV Edmonton and our partner organizations: Streetworks, Kairos House, Pride Centre of Edmonton, Change for Children and SIHA (Student International Health Association). All funds raised are used in local programming, such as raising awareness of HIV/AIDS, prevention work and supporting people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

"Stigma and discrimination are issues that stop people from being tested and avoid treatment" says Jakubec. "This is our most important annual event where people who are living with HIV/AIDS or people who have friends or family living with HIV/AIDS can come out and walk, demonstrating that HIV/AIDS is a part of the Edmonton community." AIDS Walk for Life Edmonton is being held in conjunction with Walks in communities across Canada.

Having generated $25.8 million and hosted a half million participants since 1996, the AIDS Walk for Life is the most important national fundraising and awareness event for the community-based AIDS movement in Canada. The event is a project of the Canadian AIDS Society in partnership with community-based AIDS organizations across Canada. We would like to thank our national sponsors and media partners including:
