The War on Poverty: 2005

Pledge Money... Learn From the Problem Solvers... Turn Promises Into Action

Current "Solutions" Are Questioned and Alternatives Proposed in Science & Spirit

QUINCY, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- July 6, 2005 -- Three perspectives on the fight against global poverty are featured in the July-August issue of Science & Spirit magazine. With the impending G8 summit (July) and U.N. General Assembly (September) focused on poverty relief, these timely articles examine the ongoing high-level commitments to eradicate poverty, while asking what more could be done. The United States has pledged to give more money for development assistance. Britain has promised to double the amount it spends on foreign aid. The United Nations will take stock of the progress made toward meeting the Millennium Development Goals. Yet it is apparent that there is a gulf between words and action, between making promises and finding effective solutions.

-- Science & Spirit evaluates governmental pledges and economic
approaches while examining alternatives grounded in science, technology,
    and sustainability.

Encouraging in-depth discussion of the issues of our time is a goal of Science & Spirit. In addition to the fight against poverty, the July-August issue offers a provocative look at a wide range of topics:
-- An oral contraceptive for men: Soon, a pill may offer men a stronger
voice in the reproductive rights discussion. But do they want one? And will
women want to turn over the responsibility to men?
-- Ethical wills: These statements of personal values or spiritual
legacies, with deep roots in the West's religions, have re-emerged in
    today's uncertain world.
-- Insects: We may despise them, but our survival is intimately linked to
    theirs.
-- God, science, and nature: Michael Shermer and Alister McGrath
investigate atheism and belief from deeply personal perspectives.

Science & Spirit is published six times a year by Heldref Publications. It is sold on newsstands and by subscription, and can be viewed on its Web site: www.science-spirit.org
