The Westin Ottawa: An Energy Conservation Leader Says Hydro Ottawa

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 10, 2007) - 'Luxurious Getaway' and 'Renewing Experience' - great words to describe The Westin Ottawa; and now "Energy Efficient" can be added to that list. Hydro Ottawa is proud to acknowledge the hotel with its third 'Companies for Conservation' award, recognizing The Westin as a local conservation leader.

The Westin Ottawa has reaped an energy savings of $260,000 this year alone - through simple process changes and minor monetary investments. The hotel credits this success to the efforts of their energy committee, individual employee contributions, and upper management support.

"The energy savings trend at the Westin Ottawa began in September, 2005," said Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies. "Their results, achieved through heightened awareness and dedication to energy efficiency, show that changing energy habits truly does make a difference. It is this commitment that makes the Westin Ottawa so deserving of the 'Companies for Conservation' award."

Using an energy management program, the hotel is able to check its real-time energy consumption at any time of the day, providing an opportunity to control energy use. The Westin Ottawa has also implemented Six Sigma initiatives - intensive process improvement methodologies - to improve electricity consumption habits.

Lighting retrofits have resulted in more energy savings for the hotel, thanks to the replacement of T12 fluorescent lamps with the more energy efficient T8 model. Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs have replaced traditional pot lights and table lamps.

Other small changes that have lead to big results include unoccupied rooms set at warmer temperatures in the summer, and cooler temperatures in the winter; timer-based HVAC systems that give immediate control over convention room settings; and recently upgraded boilers.

In fact, Starwood Hotels and Resorts (North American Division), the Westin's parent company, has also recognized the hotel's dedication to energy conservation with two prestigious awards: The Energard Top 10 Best Performer award and The Most Improved Energy Efficiency award for 2006/2007.

'Companies for Conservation' is an initiative to celebrate the exciting and innovative conservation projects being undertaken by commercial electricity users in Ottawa. The program, which started in October, will recognize one local company or organization for their leadership every month. These companies are making a difference by embodying a true culture of conservation.

"Recipients of this award have demonstrated that stepping up and leading by example can translate environmental stewardship into bottom line efficiencies," said Leclair "Their leadership in conservation initiatives sets the path for others to follow - energy efficiency is a great investment."
