THECIS: 60% of Canadians See Opportunities Ahead: GEM Report

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - April 9, 2014) - Almost 60% of Canadians see opportunities for starting a business in the next six months - the highest rate in the G7, a new report shows.

The 2013 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Canada - issued by the Centre for Innovation Studies (THECIS) - also found at least 60% of Canadians call entrepreneurship a good career choice; that's a positive sign.

"Entrepreneurs are innovators who fuel economic growth," explains Peter Josty, Executive Director, The Centre for Innovation Studies and Leader, GEM Canada team. "Today's report means Canadian entrepreneurship is strong. Optimism is also up compared to the last GEM report in 2003, and that's very encouraging."

Highlights include:

  • At 12.2%, the level of entrepreneurship in Canada is virtually equal to that in the US and well ahead of other G7 countries
  • The Canadian rate of female entrepreneurship is among the highest in the G7
  • First-generation immigrants in Canada undertake entrepreneurial activity at a greater rate than the
    general population

GEM is the world's largest and oldest international study of entrepreneurship. It compares Canada with 70 other countries.
