Their Excellencies to Host an Art Matters in Kitchener

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 11, 2010) - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada and her husband Jean-Daniel Lafond will host an Art Matters public forum at the Centre in the Square, in Kitchener, on Monday June 14, at 3 p.m., during a regional visit.

The visit will allow Their Excellencies to witness the cultural vitality of the Kitchener-Waterloo region.

They will host an Art Matters public forum that will explore the theme "Creating art, creating communities". The event is organized in collaboration with Magnetic North Theatre Festival. In the morning, Their Excellencies will visit a Mennonite community in Kitchener. Before leaving the region, they will attend a play during the Magnetic North Theatre Festival.

Monday, June 14

11 a.m.
Visit to BlackBerry Manufacturing Plant
Their Excellencies will visit a Research In Motion (RIM) manufacturing plant. RIM is the designer and manufacturer of the award-winning BlackBerry® Smartphone, used by millions of people around the world. Founded in 1984, its worldwide headquarters are located in Waterloo, Ontario, with offices in North America, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Europe.

Meeting with Mayors of Kitchener and Waterloo and Waterloo Region Chairman
Their Excellencies will meet with the mayor of Kitchener, Mr. Carl Zehr, the mayor of the municipality of Waterloo, Ms. Brenda Halloran, and the Regional Chair of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Mr. Ken Seiling, to discuss their respective communities and the region.

Meeting with members of the Mennonite Central Committee Ontario (MCC)
Their Excellencies will meet some of the Mennonite Central Committee Ontario Board members and staff to engage in a discussion about their work and their interests.

Art Matters public forum
Their Excellencies will host an Art Matters public forum organized in collaboration with Magnetic North Theatre Festival. The discussion will explore the theme "Creating art, creating communities". The moderator will be Loree Lawrence, Community and Multidisciplinary Arts Officer at the Ontario Arts Council. Panelists at the discussion will be Nina Lee Quino, Artistic Director, Cahoots Theatre Projects, Toronto; Samir Baijal, Artistic Director, Hillside Festival, Guelph; Heather Haynes, Director, Toronto Free Gallery, Toronto; Archer Pechawis, performance artist, new media artist, filmmaker, writer, curator and educator, British Columbia; and Gavin Stride, Theatre Director and Producer, Farnham Maltings, United Kingdom. Their Excellencies will deliver remarks.

Globe Theatre's Play Elephant Wake
Their Excellencies will attend the opening night of Globe Theatre's Elephant Wake, a play written and performed by Joey Tremblay and directed and designed by Bretta Gerecke. The play is presented during the Magnetic North Theatre Festival. The Globe Theatre is a company from Regina, Saskatchewan.
