Their Excellencies to Serve as Patrons of Canada Army Run

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 4, 2013) - Canada Army Run announced today that Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will become patrons of Canada Army Run.

The Governor General, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of Canada, has participated in the last two Canada Army Runs - both in an official capacity and as a participant. In 2011, he ran the half marathon and in 2012, the 5K. Her Excellency has also participated.

"Their Excellencies are champions and role models for overall fitness, family and community values, and are enthusiastic supporters of our men and women in uniform," said Lieutenant-General Marquis Hainse, the Commander of the Canadian Army. "For our soldiers, who are often put in harm's way to keep Canadians safe at home and abroad, that support is important and so very much appreciated."

Canada Army Run - now in its sixth year - remains the fastest growing run in Canada. Even with the addition of 4,000 additional spots this year, the event sold out in early June, with 22,000 people registered to run, walk or roll in a 5K or half marathon event on September 22.

Fundraising efforts and proceeds from Canada Army Run benefit the Military Families Fund and Soldier On. Last year's event raised more than $250,000 for these charities.

Canada Army Run, the fastest growing run in Canada, is a unique running event in which Canadians run, walk, or roll side-by-side with members of the Canadian Armed Forces in half marathon and 5K events. More than $250,000 was raised last year. Fundraising efforts and proceeds will once again benefit Soldier On and the Military Families Fund. The 2013 Canada Army Run is scheduled for Sunday, September 22.
