There's much left to do

Labour expects MPs to get things done before an election Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor OTTAWA--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 26, 2005) - Working people look forward to the upcoming session of Parliament, likely the last before the next election. According to the Canadian Labour Congress, there is a lot of work left to do. Canadians expect their representatives to get things done.

"Working citizens are still waiting for their pensions to be protected, for real pay equity, and Employment Insurance that is there when they need it. They still don't see the national child care program they were promised, and worry now more than ever that private health care will cost them more," says Ken Georgetti, President of the Canadian Labour Congress.

Georgetti says the unions of the Canadian Labour Congress will be working full-out this session to make sure Parliament listens to working citizens and puts their needs first.

He says better labour laws that make replacement workers illegal and bring long overdue protections for people who are self-employed or work part-time, contract, or temporary jobs are also a priority. Protecting whistle-blowers is also a priority for labour, along with improving access to training and adjustment programs for workers.

"For too long government has listened to the voices of the corporate elite. They made choices that rewarded wealth instead of work, and other bad choices we can no longer afford. The majority of voters work for wages. It's time to listen to them," says Georgetti.

The Canadian Labour Congress, the national voice of the labour movement, represents 3 million Canadian workers. The CLC brings together Canada's national and international unions along with the provincial and territorial federations of labour and 137 district labour councils.
