Third Brigade Deep Security 3 Protects Vulnerable Enterprises From Internet Attacks-Host Intrusion Prevention 'HIP' Software Controls Growing Security Risks

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - July 5, 2005) - Third Brigade Inc. today announced the general availability of Third Brigade Deep Security 3, an advanced Host Intrusion Prevention (HIP) product targeted at government, healthcare, financial services, higher education and other enterprises. Third Brigade Deep Security allows organizations to maintain control over IT assets that are threatened by growing security risks. It provides a last line of defense against a broad range of Internet attacks and helps ensure compliance and business continuity.

"With the relative ease that many types of attacks by-pass perimeter security, Host Intrusion Prevention (HIP) is fundamental to a comprehensive, defense-in-depth security strategy," said Wael Mohamed, President and Chief Executive Officer of Third Brigade. "The cost of these attacks, including regulatory fines related to HIPAA, GLBA and SOX, lost revenue and productivity, and damages to brand equity, can be enormous," he added.

Key Features

Third Brigade Deep Security comprises two main components, the Manager and Agent. The Manager is a role-based central management platform and has a compact rule set. It allows administrators to enforce security policies across Windows, Linux and other types of hosts in large IT environments, with little management overhead. The Agent is a small footprint software component that combines a stateful firewall and deep packet inspection. The stateful firewall reduces the attack surface of hosts by controlling network access to intended services. Deep packet inspection shields vulnerabilities from being exploited by filtering out known and unknown attacks and protocol anomalies.

HIP Protection Techniques

"Gartner recommends HIP as one of the strategic security investments for 2005. In addition, Gartner believes that leading HIP solutions will use multiple protection techniques, and recommends solutions that take a network-level approach be considered mandatory for deployment by the end of the year," said Neil MacDonald, VP, Distinguished Analyst Information Security, Privacy and Risk, Gartner Inc. "Network-level HIPS products use deep packet inspection to detect obfuscated attacks that span multiple packets, and in the future, viruses in reassembled attachments," he added.

Third Brigade Deep Security incorporates stateful firewall and deep packet inspection techniques at the network-level to block attacks before they can get on a machine. Unlike other HIP or pure Network IPS (NIPS) approaches, Third Brigade Deep Security also (1) provides proactive protection against the broadest range of attacks with fewer costly false positives, (2) ensures greater compliance with corporate and regulatory policies, and (3) is comparatively simple to manage with little impact on hosts.

"The packet filter technologies that are integral to Third Brigade Deep Security have been protecting our organization for three years," said Ramin Rafeyan, Director of Operations, Tenrox Corporation, a worldwide leader in project and workforce management software - serving over 800 mid-to-large sized organizations in 50 countries since 1995. "Third Brigade's new release augments these core capabilities by providing powerful centralized management and broader platform support," he added.
