Third Quarter Housing Starts Higher in Guelph

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2010) - The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released preliminary housing starts data for the Guelph Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) today. Construction began on 229 dwellings in the third quarter of 2010, up from the 132 units started in the same quarter last year.

Builders poured 82 single-detached foundations in the third quarter, down from the 91 homes started in the third quarter of 2009. Townhouse starts more than doubled to 75 units, while apartment starts, at 70, also contributed to the increase in starts. For the first three quarters of 2010, housing starts in the Guelph CMA have more than doubled from the same time last year due to the increase in detached, townhome and apartment starts.

"The first nine months of this year have been busy for homebuilders due to the stronger demand for new homes from both first-time and move-up buyers," said Erica McLerie CMHC Senior Market Analyst. "The surge in construction of the relatively more affordable townhouses and condominium apartments this year has been geared to first-time buyers and empty nesters," added McLerie.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
