Thomas Nelson Announces Appointment of Michael S. Hyatt as Chief Executive Officer; Sam Moore to Continue as Board Chairman

NASHVILLE, TN -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 18, 2005 -- Thomas Nelson, Inc.'s (NYSE: TNM) Board of Directors announced today that Michael S. Hyatt has been appointed Chief Executive Officer, succeeding to that post from Sam Moore, who has agreed to remain as Chairman of the Board.

Michael S. Hyatt (50) is Chief Executive Officer of Thomas Nelson, Inc., the largest Christian publishing company in the world and the ninth-largest trade book publisher in North America. He has worked for Thomas Nelson for 12 years.

In his 28-year career, has worked in almost every capacity of the publishing industry. Within the publishing industry itself he has extensive experience as a salesman, marketer, editor and senior manager. He has also served as a literary agent, representing some of the best-known Christian authors in the industry. He is the author of four books, including "The Millennium Bug" (Regnery Press), which appeared on the New York Times Business Bestsellers list for seven consecutive months.

Hyatt joined Thomas Nelson for the second time in 1998 as Vice-President and Associate Publisher for the Nelson Books division. He was named publisher of this same division in July 2000. In early 2002, he was named Executive Vice-President and Group Publisher of the Thomas Nelson Book Group, which then included the company's twelve book divisions. He then became President and Chief Operating Officer of the Company in February 2004.

Hyatt began his publishing career at Word Publishing while a student at Baylor University. He worked at Word for a total of six years. In addition to serving as Vice President of Marketing at Thomas Nelson in the mid-80s, he also started his own publishing company, Wolgemuth & Hyatt, with his partner Robert Wolgemuth in 1986. The company was eventually acquired by Word in 1992. Hyatt was a successful literary agent from 1992 until early 1998.

Hyatt has been married to his wife, Gail, for 27 years. He has five daughters, ages 14-25 and two granddaughters. He and his family live outside of Nashville, Tennessee. He serves as a deacon at St. Ignatius Orthodox Church, where he has been a member for 21 years. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, photography, blogging and reading.
