Thompson & Knight Names New Partners

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - February 29, 2016) -  Thompson & Knight LLP is pleased to announce Vivian M. Arias, Steven E. Bartz, Justin S. Cohen, Katie Coleman, Janelle L. Davis, Dan J. Hopper, Kurt Summers, and Robert Vartabedian have been elected Partner.

The eight lawyers newly elected to partnership in the Firm are:

Vivian M. Arias, Real Estate and Banking, New York:

Vivian focuses her practice on representing institutional lenders, including national banks, special servicers, and investment banks, in creditors' rights litigation, insolvency, and Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, as well as loan restructurings and workouts. She also represents corporate and individual parties in contract and commercial disputes in arbitration and litigation in state and federal courts. She has been selected for inclusion in New York Rising Stars® by Thomson Reuters (2011-2015) and Empire State Counsel® by New York Bar Association.

Steven E. Bartz, Corporate and Securities, Dallas:

Steve's practice focuses on the representation of private equity funds, family offices, and their investors as well as private companies, capital funding sources, financial institutions, and other qualified investors in connection with domestic and international transactions. His experience encompasses a broad array of industries and a wide range of M&A and private equity transactions, and he has counseled clients on numerous cross-border transactions. Steve also has extensive experience in complex joint venture transactions, including fund formation transactions, private equity sponsor platform formation, and strategic alliances. He has been selected for inclusion in Texas Rising Stars® by Thomson Reuters (2014-2015).

Justin S. Cohen, Intellectual Property, Dallas:

Justin focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation and counseling, primarily in the areas of software, electrical, mechanical, telecommunications, and semiconductor technologies. He has represented clients in various patent, copyright, and trademark litigation and also helps clients identify, evaluate, license, and enforce their intellectual property assets. In addition, Justin has extensive expertise counseling companies with cybersecurity and data privacy issues. He has been selected for inclusion in Texas Rising Stars® by Thomson Reuters (2015).

Katie Coleman, Government and Regulatory, Austin:

Katie focuses her practice on regulatory and administrative law, with emphasis on state and federal energy regulations, energy markets, energy litigation, and government affairs and appeals. Her significant experience with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas ("ERCOT") allows her to provide clients with practical solutions to complicated matters involving the ERCOT protocols that govern wholesale market participation. She routinely assists companies in contracting and infrastructure projects. She also has expertise in administrative law matters involving rulemakings and disputes before the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts and the Texas Racing Commission. She has been selected an "Associate to Watch" by the prestigious Chambers USA 2015 directory, which notes that she "gains widespread market recognition."

Janelle L. Davis, Trial, Dallas:

Janelle focuses her practice on mass tort, products liability, aviation, advertising, business litigation, and oil and gas litigation. She represents commercial airlines in litigation arising from passenger claims and product manufacturers in products liability litigation. She has also represented companies in class action litigation over the validity of claims made on product labeling and in advertising materials. Janelle's experience managing mass tort cases includes coordination with national and discovery counsel, expert witnesses, and trial counsel. She also has experience making and implementing strategic decisions throughout a case and drafting dispositive and Daubert motions. She has been selected for inclusion in Texas Rising Stars®by Thomson Reuters (2013-2015).

Dan J. Hopper, Real Estate and Banking, Dallas:

Dan focuses his practice on all aspects of commercial real estate and business transactions. He works with special servicers in the CMBS market and other financial institutions in connection with all aspects of real property secured loan workouts and REO dispositions. In addition, Dan assists companies with respect to the financing, acquisition, disposition, and leasing of commercial real property.

Kurt Summers, Finance, Dallas:

Kurt represents clients in lending and structured finance transactions, with an emphasis on oil and gas and asset-based transactions. His experience includes both lead arranger and borrower representations, secured and unsecured, ranging from small club deals to large syndicated transactions as well as volumetric production payment and derivative transactions.

Robert Vartabedian, Trial, Fort Worth:

Rob represents oil, gas, and energy companies in a wide range of litigation matters including, lease termination litigation, other trespass to try title claims, claims for breaches of implied covenants to an oil and gas lease, contract interpretation issues, royalty disputes, suits for breaches of joint operating agreements, and surface use disputes. In addition to his energy litigation expertise, he also handles various commercial disputes in other industries as well as employment cases. Rob has successfully tried over a dozen cases to verdict and handled multiple successful appeals in Texas courts and the Fifth Circuit. He has been selected for inclusion in Texas Rising Stars® by Thomson Reuters (2011-2015) and "Top Attorneys" by Fort Worth, Texas magazine (2015).
