A Thousand New Students to Receive a Scholarship from the Canada Millennium Foundation

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 11, 2005) - More than a thousand Canadian students will benefit from a national in-course scholarship awarded today by the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation for their active citizenship, engaged leadership, innovative thinking and academic achievement. Many of the awards are renewable, worth up to a total of $10,000.

"These talented students have contributed greatly to the lives of communities across Canada," said Gerard Veilleux, chairman of the Foundation's Board of Directors. "Through the millennium excellence award, we are investing in outstanding leaders as they continue to improve the world around them."

The national in-course awards reward and recognize students beginning the upper years of their undergraduate university or college studies who have not yet received a significant merit scholarship. The Foundation issues the awards in partnership with Canada's CEGEPS, colleges and universities.

"By working together with more than 225 post-secondary institutions across the country, the Foundation is able to recognize students who turn their vision of the Canada of tomorrow into the reality of today," said Norman Riddell, the Foundation's executive director and CEO.

The national in-course awards are divided into three levels:

- $5,000 renewable scholarships (100) - for a total of $10,000.

- $4,000 renewable scholarships (200) - for a total of $8,000.

- $4,000 non-renewable scholarships (714).

The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation is a private, independent organization created by an act of parliament in 1998. It encourages Canadian students to strive for excellence and pursue their post-secondary studies. The foundation distributes $340 million in bursaries and scholarships each year throughout Canada. Since its inception, it has awarded more than $1.7 billion in the form of over 550,000 bursaries and scholarships to Canadian post-secondary students.
