Three "Average Employees" Complete a Not-So-Average Journey

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 25, 2006) - Last fall, three employees of The Keg Steakhouse & Bar started talking about ways they could make a difference for their respective communities. They decided to cycle across Canada to raise money for charity, and the Cycle for Spirit was born. Steve Fidler (Vancouver, BC), Adrian Pusiak (Toronto, ON) and Jeremy Cummings (St. John's, NL) left Victoria on April 24th to begin their cross-Canada bike ride, and finished in St. John's on August 4th.

These riders were not avid cyclists. Rather, they are ordinary employees that wanted to do something extraordinary. Their goal was to encourage other staff within The Keg to raise money for charities through The Keg Spirit Foundation. By the end of the event, they raised over $184,000, stopped at 34 Keg locations across the country, and united more than 7,000 other Keg staff members to do something amazing for charity. "We set out on this journey not just to raise funds for The Keg Spirit Foundation but to raise understanding and awareness throughout the Keg World about what The Keg Spirit Foundation does, and how we can work together to make a difference for charities in our communities", said Steve Fidler, one of the riders.

This is an amazing example of what can happen when an employee-driven, grass roots idea takes hold in a company. "Through this incredible adventure, Jeremy, Adrian and Steve have united our entire company in something that became bigger than anyone could have imagined " says David Aisenstat, President and CEO of Keg Restaurants Ltd. "Despite the fact that this kind of enthusiasm has always been at the heart of The Keg, the Cycle for Spirit has become a defining moment in our company because of the passion and inspiration Jeremy, Adrian and Steve have shown throughout their journey".

This ride was supported by corporate sponsors including Giant Bikes, Helly Hansen, and Islander R.V. In addition, all costs relating to both the ride and the foundation are fully funded by The Keg Steakhouse & Bar. One hundred per cent of the money raised will go to local charities through The Keg Spirit Foundation.
