Thumbs up for NDP's national childcare

Legislation and commitment to community-based services

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 11, 2011) - The New Democratic Party's commitment to a national childcare program was welcomed today by Code Blue for Child Care, a campaign working to highlight early childhood education and childcare in the federal election campaign. The group gave thumbs up to the NDP's reaffirmation of the party's long-standing commitment publicly-funded childcare.

"We are especially pleased to see a pledge to legislation enshrining a national childcare program in law," said Shellie Bird, Ottawa-based childcare worker and coordinator of the Code Blue campaign. "National legislation is central to a solid policy framework focused on the care and education needs of children and supporting parents. The federal government has a key role in supporting provinces and territories to implement early learning and childcare systems."

The Child Care Advocacy Association of Canada's Saskatoon-based Sue Delanoy, said, "The emphasis on community-based programs integrating early childhood education and childcare is consistent with the view of advocates and the research that childcare is not a profit-making business. The NDP's basic commitment to childcare as part of strong and democratic institutions – not to big-box childcare corporations – is key for quality and accessibility".

Code Blue for Child Care, a coalition of childcare, anti-poverty, labour, women's and social justice groups from across Canada, advocates for a universal system of publicly funded, publicly managed high quality childcare. The group is urging all political leaders to commit to building such a system by 2020, beginning with an immediate, substantial infusion of funds and a robust policy framework.

Code Blue noted that "most Canadians outside Quebec support a strong role for the federal government in ensuring accessible high quality early childhood education and childcare that Canadian families need. The NDP's proposal represents solid practical steps toward building a childcare system to benefit all Canadian children and families.
