Tim Hortons Commits to 100 Percent Cage-Free Eggs

Canada's largest restaurant chain joins other major brands in eliminating cage eggs

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Feb. 1, 2016) - Tim Hortons, with more than 3,600 Canadian and almost 900 U.S. locations, has committed to eliminating the cage confinement of hens from its egg supply chain by switching to 100 percent cage-free eggs.

The announcement comes via Tim Hortons' parent company, Restaurant Brands International, and applies to the company's brands worldwide, including Burger King.

"RBI is committed to transitioning to 100 percent cage-free eggs globally-and will accomplish that goal for our U.S., Canadian, and Mexican Tim Hortons and Burger King locations by 2025," announced the company. "We also continue engaging with our partners at The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International to better understand this issue and others like it."

Sayara Thurston, campaign manager with Humane Society International/Canada, said: "Tim Hortons' announcement is tremendous news for millions of animals. Timmie's joining the cage-free movement is a clear signal that the future of Canadian egg production must be cage-free."

Other companies that have committed to sourcing 100 percent cage-free eggs in Canada include McDonald's, Subway, Nestlé, Starbucks and Unilever. Globally, the cage-free movement includes dozens of the food industry's largest players.
