Time Change Survey: Half of Canadians Will Catch Up on Sleep

FedEx Express Canada, Canadian Blood Services Urge Canadians to Donate Blood

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 31, 2013) - Whether it is the change in weather, fatigue from a hectic Halloween, or simply the anticipated rush of the upcoming holiday season, one thing is clear-as daylight savings time ends this Sunday at 2:00 a.m., half of Canadians will use the extra hour to catch up on sleep.

Federal Express Canada Ltd. (FedEx Express Canada), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE:FDX) commissioned Angus Reid on behalf of Canadian Blood Services to ask Canadians what they would do with an extra hour. The survey revealed many interesting findings:

  • 50% of Canadians would use an extra hour a day to catch up on sleep.

  • 15% would use the extra hour to pursue personal interests or hobbies.

  • Using the extra hour to spend with friends and family would be the priority to 14% of Canadians.

  • An extra hour would allow 7% of Canadians to catch up on chores and household errands while catching up on work would be top-of-mind for 4% of Canadians.

  • 4% of Canadians would use the extra hour to exercise.

  • Only 1% of Canadians would dedicate their extra hour of free time to volunteering.

  • Less than 1% percent of Canadians would use that extra hour to donate blood.

"Canadians look forward to the end of daylight savings time as an opportunity to reclaim the most precious of commodities-an hour of free time," said Lisa Lisson, president of FedEx Express Canada. "FedEx appreciates the value of time. And as a supporter of Canadian Blood Services, we encourage Canadians to use this extra time to consider donating blood, a precious commodity for many patients."

The upcoming holiday season represents a busy time for Canadians, so it stands to reason that an extra hour of free time would most often be enjoyed for personal benefit. However, as chaotic as this time of year can be, Canadian Blood Services relies on Canada's giving nature to find the time to donate blood.

"As Canadians gear up to celebrate the approaching holiday season, many patients will be fighting to celebrate life itself. One leukemia patient can require up to 8 blood donors a week to survive," said Mark Donnison, vice president of Donor Relations for Canadian Blood Services. "I encourage everyone to take advantage of this extra hour to make a blood donation to ensure an adequate blood and platelet supply to hospitals and patients over the next few weeks."

About The FedEx Express Canada Time Change Survey

From October 25 to October 26, 2013 an online survey was conducted among 1,004 randomly selected Canadian adults who are Angus Reid Forum panelists. The margin of error - which measures sampling variability - is +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20. The results have been statistically weighted according to education, age, gender and region (and in Quebec, language) Census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of Canada. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
