Time for Action-Recall Parliament and Get to Work on Economy: CME

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 15, 2008) - Time is of the essence for Stephen Harper's new government. It's time to return to work, our economy can't wait, according to Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters.

"It may be the day after the election, but the challenges affecting the Canadian economy are too urgent and too critical for our new government," says CME President Jayson Myers. "We have a new minority government whose sole mandate right now is to take urgent action to safeguard business investment, jobs, and incomes, and ensure economic growth."

CME, Canada's leading trade and industry association, conducted a poll over the 2 days leading up to the election. All of the 419 CEOs who responded, identified an immediate plan of action as the top priority for Canada's new government.

"We need Parliament to resume as soon as possible and we need an all-party consensus on a plan to boost investment in productive technologies, innovation, skills development, and public infrastructure," adds Myers. "This is not the time to play politics with the well being of Canadians. It's time to act."

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) is Canada's leading trade and industry association and the voice of manufacturing and global business in Canada.

The association directly represents more than 10,000 leading companies nationwide. More than 85% of CME's members are small and medium-sized enterprises. As Canada's leading business network, CME, through various initiatives including the establishment of the Canadian Manufacturing Coalition, touches more than 100,000 companies from coast to coast, engaged in manufacturing, global business and service-related industries.

CME's membership network accounts for an estimated 82% of total manufacturing production and 90% of Canada's exports.
