Timmermann Group & the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center Collaborate to Launch the New Danforth Center Website

SAINT LOUIS, MO--(Marketwire - September 9, 2010) -  The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, one of the world's largest not-for-profit plant science research institutes based in St. Louis, MO, has launched a new website,, with the help of St. Louis-based internet strategy, design and development firm, Timmermann Group.

The Danforth Center's mission is to improve the human condition through plant science. Researchers strive to enhance the nutritional content of plants, increase agricultural production to create a sustainable food supply, reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizer, develop new and sustainable biofuels, and generate scientific ideas and technologies.

Named in honor of its founder William H. Danforth's father, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center is a fitting tribute to this one-time leader of the Ralston Purina Company. The company, which grew rapidly under his leadership, was in his day a pillar of American agriculture, a major producer of feed for farm animals and pets, and of breakfast cereals. Today, the Danforth Center carries on a tradition of agricultural service and commitment to human health and well-being.

Timmermann Group was hired to collaborate with the Danforth Center website team on four focus areas: website usability, website design, web development and content management. As an industry expert, Timmermann Group was chosen as the top qualified candidate in a request for proposals that took place in late 2009.

"Our goal was to create a website that is 'best in class' and easy to navigate for a variety of visitors. We selected Timmermann Group because they presented a vision for organizing the site to meet these goals and they had the expertise to execute that vision," said Sam Fiorello.

The Danforth Center website team had representation from five leadership areas. Senior leadership by Sam Fiorello -- COO & Sr. Vice President; information technology by Joe Iskra -- Senior Programmer/Analyst & DBA; media relations & government affairs by Karla Goldstein -- Vice President of Public and Government Affairs; development by Daniel Waxler -- Director of Development Communications; and scientific by Dr. Leslie Hicks -- Director of Proteomics & Mass Spectrometry. Rob Timmermann -- CEO of Timmermann Group was the lead consultant on the project.

Timmermann Group and the Danforth Center team worked together very closely to plan out the more than 1,000 page website. One of the main goals was to showcase all interests of the various Danforth Center departments equally. Timmermann Group accomplished this goal through a series of graphic interfaces and a well-planned page structure.

"From a functional standpoint, the development of this new site was challenging because of our desire to implement WordPress, and all of its rich CMS features, on a Microsoft Server 2008 platform to accommodate legacy ASP applications and MS SQL Server data. Fortunately, WordPress for Windows allowed us to meet this goal. The end result is a single, stable IIS 7 web server that delivers both ASP and PHP environments simultaneously and also accesses mixed data between SQL Server and MySQL databases," said Iskra. "Once Timmermann Group completed the visuals of the website I was able to implement the legacy data and applications as well as begin developing custom PHP to leverage WordPress."

Keeping the site fresh with new content was important for Danforth COO Sam Fiorello. "We have many individuals who by the nature of their work, need to update their web pages on a regular basis and we are committed to keeping a consistent look throughout our website," said Fiorello. "WordPress allows this to happen with no HTML or programming expertise."

"We are grateful to have been chosen for a project associated with an organization dedicated to improving our planet," said Timmermann. "Our team believes in their vision and mission so everyone was very excited about working with the Danforth Center. We are proud to add them to our growing list of 'green' clients and look very forward to showing off the new Donald Danforth Plant Science Center Website!"
