Timoteo G. Hernaez Joins SmithGroup in SF

Healthcare Expertise Expands, New Delhi Project on Horizon

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 18, 2007 -- Timoteo G. Hernaez, a veteran architect who has specialized for 25 years in the design of medical center projects, joins the San Francisco offices of SmithGroup, one of the nation's leading architecture and engineering firms.

As a project director at SmithGroup, he will complement senior leadership for the firm's growing practice in the healthcare sector.

Hernaez is a longtime Bay Area resident with extensive management experience in top-rated architectural firms. Before signing on with SmithGroup, he was an associate principal at Anshen + Allen in San Francisco. He also previously worked in the San Francisco offices of Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) and Chong Partners.

At SmithGroup he will be responsible for client contact, expanding the healthcare practice, supervising staff and coordinating teams for key projects. His first assignments include planning for the Institute for Liver and Biliary Science in India, a world-class medical center sponsored by the New Delhi government, estimated for completion in three years.

Drawing upon the combined expertise of SmithGroup in San Francisco and the architectural firm Gautam Shaw & Associates in India, New Delhi officials are developing the institute for the care, hospitalization and surgery of patients with liver and biliary disorders. Resembling a college campus environment, the facility will also function as an academic center for research, training and international collaboration within the medical community.

The SmithGroup building program to support the comprehensive center is expected to total approximately 775,000 square feet. Although the number of final structures is uncertain at this stage, anticipated components include a clinical block, academic block, rehabilitation facilities, auditorium, administration offices and housing for staff and guests.

A world-class project with a global mission fits the credentials Hernaez brings to his new post. He has directed or supervised additions, expansions and renovations for award-winning medical centers, hospitals and universities throughout the West and overseas. Earlier in his career he served as project manager for Shanghai Children's Hospital in China, an innovative facility planned with Project HOPE and a local medical university.

In the Bay Area, his team contributions are reflected in the Chinese Hospital in San Francisco, Children's Hospital in Oakland, the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital, Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch and the Kaiser Vallejo Medical Center.

Hernaez is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health, the American College of Healthcare Architects, the Health Facility Institute and the California Society for Healthcare Engineering. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
