Many small and mid-sized retailers do as much as 40 percent of their annual sales in the final two months of the calendar year, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF), a Washington, D.C.-based trade group. According to comScore, a marketing research company, November 29, "Cyber Monday," was the busiest online shopping day in history, with more than $1 billion spent in the U.S. The NRF says 212 million shoppers visited stores and websites over Black Friday weekend, up from 195 million last year, and the average shopper spent $365.34, up from last year's $343.31. Overall, the NRF predicts that sales for the holiday season will rise by about 2.3 percent in 2010, an increase that would put national retail sales this year at around $447 billion, the best season since 2007.
