'Tis the Season to Be Shopping -- For a New Job

From Jingle Bells to Job Applications, 110.5 Million Americans Are in the Market for a New Job

BURLINGAME, CA--(Marketwire - November 23, 2010) - Black Friday marks the unofficial start to the holiday shopping season but this year, many Americans will be in the market for new jobs as well as gifts. A recent Jobvite survey found that 110.5 million Americans are actively seeking or open to a new job -- and that those best positioned to find a new role cultivate career resources and networks continually. With recent positive signs for gradual job growth in the New Year, savvy job seekers can get a jump on their next positions -- and the competition -- by using the holidays to shop for jobs. Employers can get a jump on hiring and job seekers can give a gift through sharing new opportunities on Jobvite Share, a free social recruiting site.

Online advertised job vacancies rose 113,700 in October to 4,409,800, following an increase of 59,900 in September*; and with four in five firms in the S&P 500 reporting growing revenue in the last three months, the foundation for hiring growth in 2011 is set. There will be plenty of competition for these new jobs; in addition to unemployed job seekers, the Jobvite survey found that two-thirds of those already employed are open to a new job or actively looking.

Those considering a job change can follow the example of the Proactive Career Managers profiled in the Jobvite Survey, Job Seeker Nation 2010. These employees, who make up 53% of the working population, continually cultivate professional relationships and resources to increase their career opportunities. Social networking pays off for enterprising job seekers: 44% of all job seekers cited referrals and/or social networks as the source of their most recent job.

"There's no reason to wait till the New Year to lay the groundwork for your next job. The holiday season is a natural time to pay attention to your professional network as well as your personal connections," said Dan Finnigan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Jobvite. "One of the best ways to build strong connections is to help out others; if you know of a good opportunity, share it with your network."

Employers and job seekers can use Jobvite Share, a free social recruiting site, to share job listings in social networks or anywhere on the web. Anyone can enter a job URL, distribute the information on the social web, target referrals in their networks and track results. It's a free and easy way to help jobs find people.

The dedicated job shopper will see new and interesting positions pop up every day; refer one of these jobs or enter your own at Jobvite Share.
